Position Summary

The ideal candidate will be able to competently perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with general or minimal supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Patrol designated areas to preserve law and order; identify and prevent criminal activity; arrest offenders; and check buildings for physical security
  • Respond to public service calls, including domestic disturbances, civil complaints, property crimes, violent crimes, traffic accidents, and misdemeanor or felony incidents
  • Collect, process, photograph, and present evidence, including fingerprints, fibers, blood, and other physical evidence
  • Enforce traffic laws and ordinances; operate radar equipment; issue warnings and citations
  • Direct and reroute traffic around fires, special events, emergencies, and congested areas
  • Investigate traffic accidents, including those involving serious injury or fatalities; assist citizens with vehicle access when needed
  • Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies during investigations and apprehension of offenders
  • Maintain positive relationships with the public; engage in crime prevention and public education efforts
  • Prepare accurate reports on arrests, activities, and unusual incidents
  • Serve civil citations and legal documents in a timely manner
  • Maintain custody of prisoners and transport detainees to jail facilities

Other Important Duties

  • Assist with criminal investigations involving crimes against persons or property
  • Participate in required training activities
  • Remove livestock from roadways as necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Knowledge of

  • Law enforcement methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, and investigations
  • Criminal law and procedures related to arrest, custody, and evidence handling
  • Offensive and defensive weapons and their proper use
  • Firearms operation and modern sheriff’s office equipment
  • First aid principles and practices
  • Departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations

Ability to

  • Accurately observe and recall names, faces, numbers, locations, and incidents
  • Properly use and maintain firearms
  • Interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and grammatically correct written reports
  • Analyze situations quickly and take appropriate emergency action
  • Maintain physical fitness necessary to perform job duties
  • Exercise sound judgment and rational thinking under stressful or dangerous conditions
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships

Experience and Training Guidelines

Experience

One year of law enforcement experience is desirable.

Training

High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by coursework in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one
  • Peace Officer License preferred but not required

Working Conditions

Environmental Conditions

Office and field law enforcement environment, including emergency response situations, irregular work hours, exposure to body fluids, armed or dangerous individuals, communicable diseases, traffic hazards, electrical hazards, dangerous animals, and natural or man-made disasters.

Physical Conditions

Duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing or sitting for extended periods, driving vehicles, making arrests, subduing violent individuals, walking or running short to long distances, and moving equipment or injured/deceased persons.
