The Walker County Public Safety Communications Center (WCPSCC) is the emergency communications center and public safety answering point (PSAP) for the City of Huntsville and Walker County. We provide Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) and dispatch services for all public safety agencies in our jurisdiction, except for the SHSU Police Department.

The Communications Center currently has Public Safety Telecommunicator positions available and is seeking experienced, licensed Telecommunicators. This is a highly technical position that provides an electronic and spoken communications link between the public and public safety personnel. All Telecommunicators are trained in law enforcement (LE), fire, and emergency medical dispatch (EMD) call-taking and radio procedures. PSTs call-take and dispatch simultaneously.

PST I — Minimum Qualifications

  • Basic TCOLE Telecommunicator License (minimum).
  • Minimum 18 months of experience; 2+ years preferred.
  • Valid Texas driver license and vehicle insurance.
  • TCIC/TLETS Operator certification.
  • IAED EMD certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to work 8–12-hour shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Strong communication skills, including active listening, multi-tasking, and the ability to function effectively under stress while handling multiple tasks simultaneously.

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of the CritiCall Personnel Selection Exam.
  • Criminal history check and background investigation.
  • Physical exam, drug screen, psychological evaluation, and hearing exam.

PST II — Minimum Qualifications

In addition to the PST I requirements above, PST II candidates must have:

  • Intermediate TCOLE Telecommunicator License.
  • IAED EMD Certification.
  • Two or more years of recent experience in a multi-disciplined emergency communications center (ECC).
  • Ability and willingness to train and mentor staff upon completion of residency requirements.

Benefits & Compensation

The starting salary for an unlicensed Telecommunicator is $47,201 annually, increasing to $48,701 annually upon completion of training/licensure.

Salary for licensed Telecommunicators is dependent on experience (DOE) and certifications, and ranges from $48,701 to $72,665.

The preferred applicant will have 2+ years of non-probationary experience in a multi-disciplined ECC.

Employee medical, dental, and vision insurance is offered through BCBS. Employees earn paid vacation, holiday, and sick leave. TCDRS retirement is at 7% with a 2.1:1 match after vesting, with an additional 457 deferred compensation plan available.
