Job Opening: Jr. Equipment Operator

Salary: $41,366

The Llano County Road & Bridge Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Jr. Equipment Operator. Under the direction of the Road Crew Chief, this role involves participating in the construction and maintenance of county roads, cattle guards, drainage systems, driveways, brush and vegetation control, and operating heavy equipment.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Operate a motor grader to spread and level material, clean ditches, remove holes, ruts, and washboard ridges, and enable proper drainage of water from roadways.
  • Operate a track loader to stockpile materials, clear debris, and remove brush and trees.
  • Operate loaders to gather material and load trucks.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance on all equipment to ensure safe working conditions and prevent mechanical issues.
  • Direct traffic in hazardous areas and provide services during emergency situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Road Commissioner and Precinct Commissioners.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures related to county road maintenance, including right-of-way boundaries, utility locations, material disposal, and safe work area setup.
  • Understanding of the operation, safety, hazards, capabilities, limitations, and servicing requirements of heavy equipment and tools used in road construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools such as chainsaws, mowers, cutting torches, and welders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using oral instructions and hand signals at job sites.

Education:

High school diploma or GED required.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience.
  • Ability to assist in training new employees.
  • Proficiency in operating at least three (3) types of heavy equipment and working knowledge of all other equipment used by the department.

Special Requirements:

  • Maintain a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Willingness to work after hours in emergency situations.
