Job Summary
Under the administrative supervision of the Senior Associate Judge, the Associate Judge exercises independent judicial authority by referral from, and is appointed by, the District and County Court at Law Judges as set forth in Tx. Gov’t Code Sec. 54A. The Associate Judge serves as a Magistrate pursuant to Tx. Code of Criminal Procedure Art. 2.09. The Associate Judge may handle matters related to civil or criminal cases. Primary responsibility for these positions is related to criminal cases, including the magistration of and setting of bail for individuals arrested for crimes committed in Williamson County. The Associate Judge will also serve on an overnight on-call basis to review and consider warrants.
Examples of Work Performed
Reviews arrest affidavits to determine probable cause, issues arrest warrants, and sets bail.
Determines personal bond eligibility and sets bond conditions.
Assures proper application of all aspects of the Texas Indigent Defense Act.
Updates Indigent Defense Plans to be filed with the State of Texas.
Reviews and approves Search Warrants for blood draws.
Conducts judicial hearings related to mental health probable cause and emergency protective orders.
Presides over specialty court dockets and specialty court hearings, which may include Transformative Justice, Felony DWI, Mental Health, and Cite & Release.
Conducts juvenile court hearings and related departmental update meetings.
Assists District Court and County Court at Law judges.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
Position involves prolonged sitting at a workstation, reaching, walking, twisting, bending, repetitive motions, and standing. Position involves occasional lifting and carrying of up to fifty (50) pounds and exertion of up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force to move objects.
Environmental Factors
Work is primarily indoors in an air-conditioned environment. Performs work in a secure area of the jail. Occasional work performed in a hospital environment. Interaction with persons accused or convicted of crimes. Regular travel between work sites as required.
Irregular Hours
Work outside of regular office hours (Monday-Friday) will be required, including nights, weekends and holidays Essential personnel for emergency situations; discretion of department director.

Minimum Qualifications
Doctorate of Jurisprudence from an accredited law school and admission to the State Bar of Texas.
Five (5) years of experience as an attorney practicing criminal law with jury trial experience in misdemeanor and felony cases.
Working knowledge of specific job-related technology.
Must be a resident of Williamson County pursuant to Texas Code 54A
