Job Title: Juvenile Probation Director FLSA Status: Exempt Department: Juvenile Probation Salary: $84,000 - $110,000 Location: Kaufman, TX Supervisor: Juvenile Board, Full Time SUMMARY: The Director of Juvenile Probation reports directly to the Juvenile Board. The Director oversees all operations of the Kaufman County Juvenile Probation Department pursuant to all applicable laws and standards including casework supervision and probation services, juvenile justice alternative education program services, day reporting program services and all supportive services provided as a part of these programs/services. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Carries out the orders of the Juvenile Courts and the Kaufman County Juvenile Board.
Analyzes and resolves work, personnel, and disciplinary problems prior to involvement of the Juvenile Board.
Assigns responsibilities and duties for each Juvenile Probation Department employee in a manner designed to enhance efficient operations and to provide quality services to the juvenile client, the public, the Courts, and other interested parties.
Supervises probation department staff, assigns duties and responsibilities to staff directly include, but not be limited to:
The assignment of juvenile probation cases to the Juvenile Probation Officers in accordance with department policy and procedure;
Evaluate the quality and quantity of supervision in the following manner: regular and frequent inspections of case files in accordance with standards that include, but are not limited to: the review and approval of reports completed by the Juvenile Probation Officer, reviewing for completion of case plans and scheduled reviews, as well as overall compliance and disposition recommendation;
Conduct individual monthly caseload reviews and conferences with Juvenile Probation Officers and assist staff in resolving case management issues;
Assigns tasks, coordinates and supervises front office staff on a daily/weekly/monthly basis for purposes that include, but are not limited to: data entry of referrals, processing data reports, closing out case files, ordering supplies, front office reception, and department correspondence;
Establishes policies, rules, and procedures for the overall function of the Juvenile Probation Department.
Maintains a liaison relationship with the Designated Juvenile Court Judges and the Juvenile Board, and heads of related government and other cooperation agencies.
Prepares and maintains an annual budget in a manner consistent with standard accounting procedures to be approved by the Kaufman County Juvenile Board and submitted to the Commissioners Court.
Prepare formal reports for funding purposes and accountability reports to administrative boards including monthly and annual reports to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department. Maintains a system of data collection on juvenile probation activities to be used for research and management purposes.
Serves as a liaison with other local/state juvenile justice system related agencies, institutions and personnel who serve and assist the youth including: schools, treatment providers, social service agencies, law enforcement, corrections, the courts, and the juvenile board.
Participate in court proceedings as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned and deemed necessary by the Kaufman County Juvenile Board.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Experience and Education:
Requires Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or related field of study.
Requires 10 years of Juvenile Probation experience
Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in Juvenile Probation
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of Texas Family Code
State, federal, and county statutes and laws in addition to other requirements for the operation of juvenile probation programs
Experience in the management of budgets and grant writing
Knowledge of management principles and practices
Excellent communication and writing skills
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to deal with crisis situations
Possess leadership ability
Required: Clean criminal history
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position involves sitting at a desk or other workstation, typing, filing, making copies, standing and communicating to other county personnel, elected officials, external agencies and the general public. Occasionally lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily indoors in an air-conditioned, smoke free office. Work outside of the normal office hours (Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm) may be required to meet deadlines and accuracy requirements. **Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions
